Make money with a side gig and figure out how long it will take to see the extra money, whether it’s online freelancing, passenger driving, or selling your goods.

NerdWallet compiled a list of 12 legal methods to earn money — at home or on the go — and ranked each one according to how quickly you can get started and be paid. While most individuals desire quick money, don’t dismiss “slow” jobs because they may pay better in the long term.

1. Pick up freelance work online

Use services like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com to make money online. Writing, programming, design, marketing, data entry, and being a virtual assistant are just a few of the freelance tasks available on these platforms. Do you have a second language under your belt? Check out sites like Gengo or One Hour Translation, or create your own website to generate business. Keep track of the going rate for the type of work you perform, no matter what kind of freelancing you do, so you know if you’re charging too much or too little.

2. Test websites and apps

Sites like UserTesting.com are another method to earn money from home. You get compensated for your opinions on how successfully — or how poorly — particular websites and apps functioned. To be accepted, you must pass a short test, after which you will be paid $10 for each 20-minute test, which includes a recording and four follow-up written questions. After your test, you might earn up to $120 by participating in a video conversation with a consumer.

3. Pick up tasks on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk

Some tasks still require a human touch, even in the age of technology. Companies frequently use platforms like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk to outsource these tasks. The tasks you’ll be assigned as a “worker” can be time-consuming — identifying photographs, transcribing movies, classifying receipts — and take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Temporary employers, often known as “requesters,” determine the fee for each activity and receive final approval before paying you. Scams can thrive in this environment, so do your homework. Join a community, such as the MTurk Crowd forum or the MTurk and Turker Nation subreddits, to avoid shady vendors. 4. Take surveys for money

Taking internet surveys can help you earn money from home, but don’t expect to be rich. Survey sites don’t usually pay well, and many of them are better for earning gift cards than cash. 5. Make money from your blog as an affiliate

If you have a substantial amount of traffic on your blog, you could generate money by joining an affiliate network. When a visitor clicks over from the website to the partner site and purchases something, affiliates (that’s you) are compensated. This is how some bloggers make a lot of money. 6. Sell your wares on Etsy

Do you enjoy crafting with wood, jewelry, embroidery, or pottery? Sell your wares on Etsy, the popular online marketplace for craftspeople selling home items, art, and trinkets. 7. Get advertising revenue from your blog or YouTube channel

Make money off of your cat videos. You might be able to make money from advertising if your YouTube videos or blog entries have a large audience. 8. Become an Instagram influencer

Instagram influencers — people who have a huge, dedicated following on the platform — are being used by companies to promote their products. Applying for opportunities through a marketing platform like Open Influence or AspireIQ, or directly contacting the brands you wish to partner with, is one way to get in on the action. 9.Sell your photography

Use sites like Fine Art America to turn your photos into revenue by uploading them and selling them as prints, T-shirts, phone cases, and more. SmugMug, 500px, and PhotoShelter are some of the other marketplaces for photographers. Some websites demand a subscription to use services such as cloud storage, password-protected galleries, and a personalized website.

10. Become a dog walker or dog sitter

Do you adore dogs? Become a dog walker to make money. Apps like Wag and Rover provide on-demand dog walking, allowing you to arrange walks around your schedule. You could offer overnight dog boarding if you have the space (and your landlord’s approval if you rent). If you sign up for these services, make sure to read the fine print.

11. List your spare bedroom on Airbnb

Another approach to get extra money is to rent out your home or spare bedroom on vacation rental sites. Prepare to spend money on cleaning and maintaining the property, replacing household items, and paying for service costs. Before you begin, double-check your rental agreement.

12. Trade in old phones, electronics for cash

Do you have an old phone, iPad, or gaming system? Sell it on Swappa or Gazelle, for example. Check out Amazon’s trade-in program, which pays out in Amazon gift cards — as well as eBay — to participants.
